How will DACA affect Cola?

As you probably know by now, DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) – a.k.a. the policy passed by the Obama administration to protect children brought into the country illegally – has been repealed by the Trump administration.

In S.C., the end of the program will affect 7,000 people (800,000 nationally), causing them to lose rights to legal employment + residency.

Locally, the decision has led to vocal resistance by individuals + groups like the Young Immigrants in Action Coalition of South Carolina and S.C.’s chapters of Indivisible. A rally at the State House about a week ago drew hundreds. The Nick recently screened a documentary + discussion on undocumented immigrants.

The Trump administration is reportedly working with key Democrat + GOP leaders this week to reach a compromise to protect DACA recipients from deportation, but a deal has not been made. S.C. Senator Lindsey Graham even proposed the Dream Act that would give these “Dreamers” a path to citizenship.
